Subject:Identity of pocket book "Japanese ornament"
Posted By: Yura Sun, Jan 19, 2020 IP: 176.106.204.132

Dear forum members

This is a pocket book (over 280 pages), provisionally called "Japanese Ornamentation".
I assume that it was printed at the turn of 17-18 centuries.
Since, the word "zu" at the end of the signature is quite similar to the similar hieroglyph 圖 in Kiyomasu Torii signature.

Best regards Yura

田中菊雄編輯 - Edited by Tanaka Kikuo
伊呂波引紋帖 - Family Crest Register in I-Ro-Ha order (Traditional ordering of the Japanese syllabary)
求古堂版 - Kyukodō Edition

源氏五十四帖之圖 - Pictures of Tale of Genji in Fifty-four Chapters

According to the colophon it was published in 1881

圖 - zu's meaning is picture or painting

I.Nagy

Thank you very much Mr. I.Nagy
However, I must apologize. I was wrong.
In fact, the title page of the book is the first drawing I just sent. The book is about ornamentation, although 75% are the arms of Japanese feudal lords. The rest is stylization of Japanese characters and drawings for ornaments.
I ask again for your help in establishing the name of the book.

With regards,
Yura

To confirm part of I. Nagy's translation, part of the book is about the Tale of the Genji. The last picture presented has 4 genjimon (symbols for each of the 54 chapters of the Tale of the Genji). You can see all 54 genjimon at the link below.

Cheers,
Stan
