Subject:Request help identifying mark on Japanese Satsuma Vase
Posted By: Roger Sun, Dec 15, 2019 IP: 2601:281:c202:b68a:6

Greetings, I would greatly appreciate any help in identifying the mark on the base of this vase. I recognize the Shimazu family Mon but that's about it. Also, I'd appreciate any tips on how to clean this matte black finish. As you can see from the photos it has a smokey dull gray residue. Thank you in advance and Happy Holidays!

According the Jisho Japanese name dictionary the name is Bunpo (Bunpou) 文峰.
This is Japanese black Satsuma, dating somewhere between 1900-1940.
No further information found about this artist (or workshop?).

There is a mark on the Gotheborg site: Kutani Bunpo, with Bunpo written in the same way as on your mark, but Kutani ware and from the 1960's.

Regards,
Martin.
