Subject:Chinese Cizhou Ware?
Posted By: JoJo Fri, Dec 06, 2019 IP: 2601:85:4780:b360:99

Hi everyone,

Can someone please help me identify the age and type of ware this Chinese brown piece might be?

There appears to be a six-character Xuande(?) regin mark intertwined within the design on the side of the piece as seen within the red circle. Size: 5 x 3 inches

Can someone please help?

Kind regards,
Jo

The piece is pottery/stoneware and not bronze or metal as it appears.

Any thoughts on this type of ware and its age?

I posted a close-up enhanced image and non-enhanced image of the mark.

Can someone please help?

The 2nd and 5th characters in the mark aren't clear, but otherwise it indeed does appear to be a zhuanshu (seal script) version of 'Made during the Xuande Reign of the Great Ming Dynasty" (Da Ming Xuan De Nian Zhi - 大明宣德年制). Bronze experts will have the final say on authenticity, but be aware that Xuande marks on bronzes constitute the most emulated marking of this type in the universe!

Best regards,

Bill H.

I was able to identify the piece as stained soapstone and not pottery/stoneware as first thought. Thank you all any way for your time.

Kind regards
