Subject:Antique vase
Posted By: Natalie Wed, Nov 27, 2019 IP: 80.5.77.168

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me identify the period (and possible value) of this vase? Or just identify the markings?

Thank you

The mark reads Watano 綿野 Sei 製 (Made by Watano).

Watano Kichiji (1859-1934) was a potter born in Kaga. He took over the shop Watano Shoten in Kobe from his father Watano Genuemon around 1877-1879 and it became well-known under the name of Watano Kichiji Shoten.
In 1880 Watano Kichiji moved his shop from Kobe to Yokohama Motomachi (the central street).
Watano Kichiji Shoten was one of the biggest Kutani export merchants.

In my opinion your vase dates from around 1900.

Regards,
Martin.

Dear Martin,

Thank you very much for your thorough response, it's a pleasure to hear from someone with knowledge on the subject. Would you say that this plate is also Japanese?

Regards,
Natalie

The plate is also Japanese, Arita ware.
The mark reads: Fuku 福 (good fortune) - in old writing - and is used from the Edo period (1603-1868) till now, , so I'm not sure about how old it is. I think 2nd half of the 20th century.

Martin.
