Subject:Celadon Cat
Posted By: Melinda Wed, Nov 13, 2019 IP: 24.153.181.162

Hello, I bought this cat at an estate sale and hope someone can tell me what the marks on the bottom mean. I also hope someone can tell me why there is a hole in one ear and on the back--is it an incense burner, and if so, why two holes. Also, any indication of age?
Thanks for any help
Melinda

This is a water dropper, a vessel to deliver small amounts of water to an ink stone used by calligraphers and artists. Once filled with water, the flow is controlled by placing a finger over the hole on the cat's back, then releasing drops of water by lifting and replacing the finger.

This water dropper looks typical of the ceramics of Korea, and that would be my guess.
