Subject:I would like to know more about this statue
Posted By: Cassie Tue, Nov 05, 2019 IP: 73.163.28.205

Hi everyone,
I would like to know more about this statue. Is it Chinese or Japanese? Is it antique or Modern? Where in China or Japan do you think it was made? And also I know in Asian art everything has an auspicious meaning so what if any is the significant meaning of an old man riding a dragon? Thank you in advance for any help you provide.

Appears from the unglazed biscuit eyes and signature blue and white glaze to be a Japanese Hirado porcelain sculpture of what I take to be the Dragon-taming Rakkan (Arhat). Perhaps Meiji period (1868-1912), but more serious Japanese collectors in the forum can advise you if its's older.

Best regards,

Bill H.
