Subject:Help please - Cupboard identification and couplet translation
Posted By: Beate Fri, Aug 02, 2019 IP: 45.56.153.80

I am considering acquiring this cupboard from a private individual - he purchased it in Shanghai in the early 1990ties as antique (> 100 years old).

I appreciate any insight from the community as to age, wood, use (perhaps a kitchen cabinet or wedding cabinet?).

I think it could be Ju Mu (Southern Elm), but I am not an expert. Also unsure if its genuine antique (Qing) or a reproduction .....

Te front doors have a Chinese couplet style carving in old Chinese characters. If somebody could help to read / translate these, it would be most appreciated!

I could decipher only the right hand side inscription, the other side is too dim.
長安厨孝成廟銅三斗鼎容一合 -
The three dou* capacity copper tripod in
Chief Refectioner* Xiaocheng's Temple makes one ge*

One dou = 10litres or 2,2 gallons
Chief Refectioner = 長安厨、a rank in the Han Dynasty
Ge = Measuring unit for grain

Quite frequently used engraving sentence.

With regards,
I.Nagy
