Subject:Large Chinese Jade Piece with Koi and Dragon
Posted By: Bruce Tue, Jul 23, 2019 IP: 2600:1702:2eb0:ca80:

Any feedback on this jade/stone plaque would be greatly appreciated, I'm only guessing on whether it's actually Chinese and is made of jade.

Many Thanks,

Bruce

I failed to provide the dimensions of this plaque.....approximately 8" x 11" or 20 x 28 cm.

Thanks Again

It could well be Jade, but you have to do a scratch test:
With a strong needle, make a 2-3 mm scratch, using enough pressure until you see a tiny white or black scratch, then tell us which color it is.

I did a scratch test (the stone seemed very hard) and the scratch was white. I'm including two photos of a second plaque that I also have that is not as white or 'clean' as the one in my first post. This second plaque also has some green spots that are mostly visible on the back side of the piece (second photo).

Thank You So Much For The Feedback!!!

Bruce

Well Bruce, we tried, but the sad news is that although it looks like Nephrite, it is not. This one is a hard Serpentine.
At least ,now you know and you have a good study piece.

Thanks again for the feedback, as a novice on jade I will do some online research on the difference between nephrite and serpentine. One final question, do you have a guess on the approximate age of the two plaques?

Namaste,

Bruce

Hi Bruce,
On the issue of age, your plaques would imo date from the later part of the 20th century.
The archaic style dragon featured at the center is crudely carved using modern tools. You may be able to see the remnants of the drill over shooting the mark and other such as hastily finished parts of your plaque. Something you would not see in genuine antique jade objects.
The colour of both your plaques appear to my eye to have been subject to treatment/enhancement to give the impression of age. Very common procedure throughout Asia on tourist type wares and other. For more information/research on dyed/treatment techniques may I suggest you search under fake or dyed jade both here and Google.
I concur with said posts by the legendary Ernest!
