Subject:Any help with Japanese lidded bowl would be great
Posted By: Paul Wilkins Fri, Jun 28, 2019 IP: 2a02:c7d:921f:df00:2

Hi

I would be really grateful if anyone could enlighten me about this bowl.
I really like it but don't know anything about it
Many thanks
Paul

Your bowl has decoration with an uncanny resemblance to a late 20th century brand made in China for export under the name "Royal Satsuma" (see link pasted below for an example with a mark having lower character portion stating "Fine article of Chinese Porcelain"). However, the larger base-mark written in seal script within square borders on your bowl (when flipped 180 degrees) appears to read from right to left as "Meiji" (明治). I'll offer a guess that your bowl might be made by the same company in China for export to Chinese communities in Asia or sale domestically. Or maybe Japanese experts in the forum can add their more enlightened perspectives, including on the small half-moon mark, which has me stumped. Gotheborg.com has other information on the Chinese-made Royal Satsuma.

This is a Chinese imitation of Japanese Satsuma ware, 2nd part of the 20th century.
The mark is unreadable for me.

Martin.

Thanks again
Paul
