Subject:Asian Vase and Seal
Posted By: Tom Reigel Sun, Jun 09, 2019 IP: 73.230.116.52

Could anyone help with the age of this vase? And the words on the seal? Thank you. I apologize, but for some reason the site turns my pictures sideways when uploaded, though they're correct on my computer. Hope that doesn't hinder too much.

The mark reads: Inoue 井上 Ryosai 良斎 (or 良齋) in a very stylistic way. It is the name of the maker, see also my picture below. This is called Sumida ware. Date: around 1900.

Sumida pottery was created not far from the city of Tokyo near the banks of the Sumida River by a potter named Inoue Ryosai 1st (1828-1899), around the beginning of the 1870's.
This mark can be of Ryosai 1st, Ryosai 2nd (1854-1905) or Ryosai 3rd (1888-1971).
The same Inoue Ryosai marks were used by all 3 Ryosai's.
Production stopped in the 1950's.
Regards,
Martin.
