Subject:Ceramic Japanese Tea Cup - Fish Pool - Signed
Posted By: Beege Wed, May 08, 2019 IP: 2.127.81.96

Hallo all.
At first glance I wasn't sure this small cup (9.5cm tall, 6.5cm diameter) was Japanese or Chinese, but the signature on the base appears to be Japanese calligraphy. There may also be a circular mark.
Can anybody please identify the style and/or signature so that I can establish how old this cup is?
Thank you
Jack

Your cup is marked with a signature that is trying to look like a Kenzan mark.

I don't think either the painting style nor the shape of the cup have any precedence in Kenzan or Kenzan school pottery.

Hi mikeoz,
Thank you for the input. I hadn't heard of the Kenzan school of work and what I have seen is a delight: quite different from many Japanese styles of antique art.
I can see what you mean re the shape of the cup, the examples I've seen are generally more elaborate than my item. Equally, although the colours have a degree or similarity, I haven't seen a similar style of painting.
Perhaps, sadly, this cup was decorated to deceive.
Regards
Jack.
