Subject:Chinese mother and child figure
Posted By: Sally Mon, Mar 25, 2019 IP: 88.104.125.44

Hi, this ceramic figure is about 9"/ 22cm tall. It is marked indistinctly on the base . Can anyone tell me who this represents and when it might have been made. Thanks

This is an image of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy to Chinese and a manifestation of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. A figure with child, such as this one, might have been used during earlier times in China as a devotional object by women hoping to bear children or be cured of an affliction preventing conception.

The mark is a bit unclear for me to read. The image possibly is of the late Qing or Republic period (circa 1900-1949).

Best regards,

Bill H.
