Subject:12-13th Century Japanese Art identification
Posted By: Nikky Mon, Mar 11, 2019 IP: 49.194.14.141

Hi guys, hoping you can help me here!!
I've come across this piece and got no idea of authenticity.
This print is on silk or paper (cant work it out) measuring 10.5"W x 16.45"H and seems to be mounted onto wood with a discolored decorative patterned background. The print is covered in lacquer. The backing is a green velvet and has a sticker that says - 4-017 (then Japanese type) Forest In Winter 12-13 Century
I know absolutely nothing about this print. Not age, origin, material or value or if its a fake? Just that it came from a deceased estate in Australia somewhere and its ended up in my hands. Can anyone help?

I don't think the japanese were painting like this in the 13th century. The style, age and the inscription suggests it was inspired on chinese Yuan Dynasty (元 = yuan).

If I have to guess, its a more recent painting, especially for the water.

寒林圖 元人 - Hanlin-tu Yuanren - Picture of Cold Forest (Forest in Winter) -
(Anonymous) Painter of Yuan Dynasty

The painting is a reproduction from the collection of Taipei National Palace Museum, attributed to an anonymous painter from the Yuan Dynasty (12-13 century)

With regards,
I.Nagy
