Subject:日本画 - 掛け軸 - monkeys help with signature and seal
Posted By: Michael Fri, Feb 15, 2019 IP: 2a02:a03f:563e:3d00:

hi all,

I'm hoping someone can help me out with the signature and seal. I got as far as 六十一公羽 '61 ?' (I'm not sure if the last 2 kanji are translated correctly) - 青雲 'seiun' for the signature but I'm completely stuck at the seal.
Any additional information about the artist is always welcome.
Thank you in advance

Best regards,
Michael

The last two characters are actually the single character 翁, meaning "old geezer", so seemingly "Old Man 61" whatever the number refers to, perhaps the artist's age, i.e. "at the age of 61". The signature correctly reads 晴雲, and the two seals are truncated/simplified variants of the same two characters: the first seal drops the 月 element from 晴, and the second seal drops the 雨 element from 雲 to leave 云.

六十一翁 - Rokujuichi-hō - 61 years old man
Signature,
晴雲 - Seiun
Seal,
晴雲 - Seiun

Presumably Emura Seiun 江村晴雲 1854-?
Ǒsaka born painter from Nara. Disciple of Mori Ippō
Painted animals in similar style, but I could not find the same seal print on his few paintings available on the net.

With regards,
I.Nagy
