Hallo David,

The mark reads: Kutani 九谷 Bizan 美山, dates from the 1st quarter of the 20th century (1900-1925).

Your piece was made by Shimizu Bizan (Shimizu Tokutaro 1861-1926), who was born in the Kanazawa prefecture. He moved to Tokyo in 1880 to learn Satsuma pottery painting.

In 1892 Bizan opended his own shop to sale his own pottery, during a time, when Kutani was very popular. His timing was very good as well as his personal style, which was well appreciated overseas. His multicolor technic, mixed with gold was very popular then - he was particulary known for delicate gold painting - and is quite representative of the style of Meiji and Taisho periods.

Regards,
Martin.
