Subject:Woodblock Print Identification help
Posted By: John A. Sun, Dec 16, 2018 IP: 2601:1c0:5c01:293d:2

I was wondering by what TOYOKUNI this Triptych was by and what it reads or is called. I see a few different ones and am guessing this one is by Toyokuni III but I cannot find one the same. Any help is like always appreciated on age and transciption.

Yes, it is by Toyokuni III (aka Kunisada). The title is 局岩藤亡霊. If you put the title in Google and translate into English, it leads you to Wikipedia and kabuki pages that summarize the kabuki play. The triptych was printed in 1860. It appears that the Waseda University Theatre Museum has a copy. See the link below, for example.

Cheers,
Stan
