Subject:Help on Chinese figurine
Posted By: George Sat, Dec 15, 2018 IP: 79.44.128.115

Hello all
I bought this figurine from a local shop because i liked it. Can someone give me some information about it? What does the gesture mean?It is about 25 cm high and there is no mark underneath.
Thank you.

You look to have a contemporary Chinese figurine of a young girl or woman. One clue to dating besides an overall new look is that girls besides those known from Chinese History, myths and legends were overshadowed in most popular art by the Chinese prejudice in favor of male heirs until the Qing Dynasty's fell in 1911. Equality for women then took some baby steps during the Republic Period, and gathered major impetus after the People's Republic was proclaimed in October 1949. Here's a circa mid-20th century white glazed figure of a seated young girl with a puppy and some melons.

The gesture doesn't have any significance I can think of right offhand in Chinese. However, I vaguely recollect seeing something similar years ago on European holiday when I failed to tip a waiter in a pizzeria in Rome. :)

Best regards,

Bill H.
