Subject:Bada Shanren Lotus and Birds
Posted By: John R Wed, Dec 12, 2018 IP: 2601:443:c102:2a10:c

I own a variation of Lotus and Birds by Bada Shanren.
There is known version of this painting on satin. My version is on paper,
which I believe was Bada's preferred medium. The work on satin was
one of at least four works that Bada created at the request of the governer of Jianxi,
Song Lao, an official who had recently executed two Ming loyalists that Bada respected.
There is a distinct difference in the brushwork from the paper version to the
work on satin. Wang Fangyu and Richard Barnhart in Master of the Lotus Garden,
described Bada's brushwok on satin as inferior to his normal style because of having to prove
his Qing loyalty. Any comments are welcome.
