Subject:Ceramic Vase Id. Asian?/Not Asian?
Posted By: Lance Frazer Tue, Oct 23, 2018 IP: 76.20.41.17

This is just a little odd, but I'm hoping someone with more knowledge in pottery than I have can help. This vase, about 5 1/2 inches tall, has what appears to be a Western conception of an Asian decoration. Not that it's not well done, it just doesn't feel either old or "authentic". The creator has put his/her initials on the bottom (not in either Japanese or Chinese characters), which also leads me to my conclusion. The initials appear to be "D.L.". I know there are a couple of ceramics artists with those initials who create this sort of pottery (David Leach, for example, although his mark is usually a lot more stylized than this). Anyway, I will greatly appreciate all guidance on this.

Lanze,
Originally your vase is Kyoto Satsuma, often not marked or marked with numbers and/or the characters left or right in Japanese. Made somewhere in the 1930's probably.
Perhaps someone with the initials D.L. painted those initials later, possibly to mark it as owner of this vase.
Regards,
Martin.
