Subject:Identification of Chinese Painting Characters
Posted By: Miano Tue, Oct 16, 2018 IP: 116.50.244.85

Hello Friends,

I would like to identify the artist and/or period.

It is a scroll, ink and color on paper, has calligraphy and four seals. Would you be in a position to translate the characters/seals, advise any artist who this work maybe attributed to and the period(60 year cycle)?

Kind regards,

Miano

春山訪友 - Spring mountain - Visiting friend(s)
歳在丙子筆秋月 - Printed in the Year of Fire-Rat
(...1876,1936...) Autumn Month
Seals are not enough clear to read, except of the
right hand side one,
三希堂精鑑壐 - Inspected by the Hall of Three Rarities
(Rectangular seal was dedicated to the Qing Emperor Qianlong and was affixed on paintings and calligraphic works seen by the Emperor himself)
Scrolls with this seal are museum copies or forgeries.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Hi Nagy,

Thank you. The 4 seals will offer more clarity on the provenance and prior appreciators.

In addition, a further study on the technique matches with court painters who were unique for the dry brush technique in drawing mountains; the splashing for vegetation, the brush blending and allowance of ink to flow freely.

I will have the paper used examined for a possible match to existing paintings which were only accessible by court painters.

Regards,

Miano
