I have kind of a nice 19th Century Chinese Porcelain Bon Bon Footed Dish needing the crude Hand Written Seal Translated if possible. As usual I Really Appreciate it Thanks! Gary K

The base mark, in seal-writing, reads down and across from the top right as "Made during the Tongzhi Reign of the Great Qing Dynasty" (Da Qing Tong Zhi Nian Zhi - 大清同治年製). The decoration features the Eight Treasures of Buddhism in atypically light enamels for the Tongzhi era (1862-1874). This could be a matter of misfiring in the kiln, or may indicate the piece post-dates the period by about half a century, or into the troubled latter years of the Republic of China. Here's a picture of a standard version of the same pattern from the Guangxu period (1875-1908), as well as the link to its thread.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hi Bill H. and Gary of course,

Apocryphal (handwritten) Tongzhi and Guangxu reign marks generally appear not before 1960. I don't think it's 1960 +. Although the colors probably aren't what it should be my feeling is that it is M&P Tongzhi.

Arjan

Hi Arjan, That rule of thumb and others can be found in in Chapter 10 of Tony Allen's most recent book, "Allen's Antique Chinese Porcelain -- The Detection of Fakes. His version says Tongzhi marks weren't faked until 1980. The segment containing these generalizations begins with a reminder that for every rule about Chinese porcelain, there are exceptions. And that's where my case rests, except to remind that the Taiping Rebellion in the mid-1850's inflicted major problems in Jingdezhen, leaving behind a generation or more of problems that might have caused the issues with this pedestal dish.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hi Bill H.

Haha..... You wrote "His version" but my 1960+ was also his version but only a few years ago when Tony shared some info about the use of apocryphal reignmarks. This was including the info about that iron red platters with dragons and Guangxu marks wich was/were discused here a while ago.
Of course you are right... every rule has his exceptions.

Regards,
Arjan
