Subject:Hidai Tenrai
Posted By: Ken Patterson Tue, Oct 09, 2018 IP:

Hi all, I have been told this item may be by Hidai Tenrai and the calligraphy is a Song dynasty Chinese poem by Yu Shi. I would be grateful if anyone could give an opinion as to whether this is correct or any other information regarding this item.
Thankyou and Regards,Ken.

Inscription in my rough translation,
The Lou Shan mountain clothes herself in full shades of color
The sounds of bamboos and spring in the far hardly can be heard
天來道人 - Tenrai-dōjin (dōjin - reclused -art-name)
Upper seal (under the signature),
Elephant (Pictogram) + 之 "Zoshi" ( Leisure- seal used by Tenrai)
Lower seal,
天來 - Tenrai

Unfortunately I cannot read fully the starting seal.

I can say with certainity that the calligrapher was Hidai Tenrai 比田井天來 1872-1939

The citation is from the poem titled 浄居院 Jingjuyuan by the Song dynasty poet Yu Shi 于石

With regards,

The first seal reads 與古為徒 - with the ancients.

Thankyou so much for your informative reply. I only found this item a few days ago and bought it because it was inexpensive. Hidea Tenrai appears to be quite well regarded in the history of Japanese calligraphy so it seems this has been quite a good find for me.
I have been trying to research the Chinese poet you mentioned (Yu Shi) but have had no luck. Can you or anyone else guide me in some more research or links where I might find some more information.

Yu Shi 于石 a.k.a Yu Jieweng 于介翁 1247-?
His works were published in 7 vols. during his life time. After the fall of Song lived in seclusion.
On the Chinese language net there are 211 poems
available from him,but I could not find his name on English language Google.Seemigly no one
has ever translated his poems into English.

With regards,
