Subject:Japanese Hanging Scroll with Chinese Calligraphy
Posted By: Alexander May Fri, Sep 28, 2018 IP: 119.92.174.170

Hi, may I request for assistance in translating and dating this Japanese hanging scroll? The characters are clearly Chinese but this piece is from Japan.

Thanks

Dear Alexander,
For the translation of the first part written on the scroll please see my answer of yesterday on
Message Board.
I think the starting seal is the clue to the calligrapher. 竹侶 Chikuro
Sugawara Chikuro 菅原竹侶 1824-1893
Nanga style painter from Iwate Prefecture
Further seal identification would require time consuming research in Japanese librairies.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thank you so much I.Nagy! Your information is very helpful.

This hanging scroll was a chance find in Kyoto a few weeks back.

There is a further 'notation' on the scroll. This is written near the strings used to hang it.
