Subject:Kutani mark
Posted By: Martin Michels Thu, Sep 27, 2018 IP: 84.26.216.123

I found this vase on Ebay with a mark I can only partly decipher.
- Right column: Kutani xx xx Sei.
- Left column: Shuzan Do (is that right?) xx Gako (painter) 画工 (I think).
I would be grateful if someone can fill in the unknown xx Kanji characters and correct me where i'm just guessing.
Thanks in advance.
Martin.

Possible reading,
橋木 - Hashiki - Family name
(or not a very correctly written 棉木 Watagi)
秀山堂畫工 - Shuzandō gakō - Shuzandō painting

With regards,
I.Nagy

Hi to Martin and I.Nagy, actually, it reads Kutani Kaburagi-sei. Kaburagi Shoho(store) is still in business in Kanazawa, Ishikawa, Japan. Best Regards, Emiko

Emiko,
You're absolutely right.
It's indeed Kaburagi.
Do you have any information about Shuzando or is it Shuzan Do?
Many thanks,
Martin.

I want to add to my previous comment, that the painter, Shuzan-do possibly made a mistake to write Kanji character,"Kabura" which is a very unusual character. It is not correctly written but there is no other explanation I can guess. Best Regards, Emiko
