Subject:Carved Wooden Japanese Figurine

Hi all.
I wonder whether anybody can identify this chap. He's about 8" tall and carefully carved: I wonder whether he is a Hotei. He does have a broken piece (beneath his left hand).
I'm wondering wether the small mark on the back of his left leg is a signature by the artist (see image).
Any suggestions gratefully received.
