Subject:Request help ID'ing 'sstamp' on bowl
Posted By: Kay Thu, Sep 13, 2018 IP: 85.76.82.157

Does the mark / writing on the base of this bowl state it is Hododa / Hotota?

And if so does it appear genuine?

Thanks for any help.

See picture, the name is Hododa, but you find also items with his signature translated as Hotoda, Hodota and Hotota, because the 2nd character can mean To or Do. And the 3rd character Ta or Da.

Anyway: the mark reads Satsuma - Hododa, looks real to me, date: 1890-1920.
His products were made under demand at small factories and studios, set up quickly to meet foreign trades.
Martin.

Thanks Martin. Unfortunately, as much as I would have liked to own the bowl, emblazoned with dragon motifs, the final price went well beyond what I was willing to pay for it.
