Subject:Japanese Painting
Posted By: Brian Michael Sun, Sep 02, 2018 IP: 50.35.99.228

Hello,
Could someone please help me identify this painting? I believe it was purchased in the 1950s.
Thank you.

This would appear to be a Chinese work, a scene of the famous West Lake (Xihu) at Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province. The painting is signed as by Wang Gaoyi (Wang Gao-yi xie - 王高一寫), with the red seal beneath having the artist's name in script. The column at the right is a cyclical date of Springtime 1956 (Bing-shen chun ri - 丙申春日). No information could be found online on the artist, but others may know something or be able to identify this painter in their references.

Best regards,

Bill H.

I don't think this is Japanese. It looks far more Chinese. It is dated 丙申 (1956)春日 (Spring day), and the artist's signature is 王商一寫 - written by Wang ShangYi

No wonder I couldn't find him. Got to learn that caoshu and pay enough attention in class, like Mikeoz and I Nagy did.

Artron.com (link) gave the following among other biographic information in one of its auctions (link):

Author profile: Wang Shangyi. Native of Guangdong, Zhongshan, Shimen. Shanghai Nanyang Business School graduate. Calligraphy studied after Han Li, painting after Huang Junbi. Has served as second Vice chairman of the Hong Kong Art Society, a visiting professor at Universities of Michigan and Wisconsin and as member of the Taipei National Fine Arts Association.

Presuming you have Google, you can pull up the link here and others using Wang's name in characters and just use the translate page link for other information on this artist.

Now back to my studies.

Best regards,

Bill H.
