Subject:Need help in my research to learn more about Foo Dog figurine

Hi,
I have a foo dog figurine that my grandmother had for many years. My uncle did import/export in Asian decorative items right after WWII.
I'm wondering if anyone could help me pinpoint an era when this item was created.
I've done research but have found so many varieties of this little guy.
Is there any meaning behind the knobs of his head? I've seen them in different numbers and patterns.
Is the backward N in the word China is of any significance?
