Subject:Real antique kutani yaki or moder replica?
Posted By: spartakos Fri, Aug 17, 2018 IP: 49.49.248.212

This item puzzles me, because or the rough nature and brownish color of it's glaze I can't estimate it's age properly, the mark looks line many other green kutani marks that were used since edo period. Please share if you have some thoughts on it.
Thank you.

It is not Japanese ko Kutani ware made at Arita in the 17th century, nor does it appear to be a 19th century revival piece. The potting and painting are poorly done, the enamel colors seem to be a bit off and the treatment of the base with its fissured glaze is very strange.

Hi,well what people forget is the Kutani revival by Yoshidaya was all made with a pottery or at best a stoneware body but as it was usually covered completely in coloured enamels one could not tell and I believe that your piece is Kutani and early 19th c.The colours and mark are correct, the body a bit of a mystery. The true Ko-Kutani ware bodies varied in quality enormously as well I would not totally discount a very early dating re Soame Jenyns Japanese Porcelain where he shows a very similar piece though in black and white.Either way it is Kutani
