Looks like it may be a statue of Guan Yu, a leading figure in "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms", who was deified as Guan Gong. The mark on the piece says "Made by Nie Shengfa" (Nie Shengfa Zao - 聶生發造), a Republic-period artist. Here's a link to an auction listing for another work with his mark, maybe the same hero in another pose. Hate to admit it, but I'm still trying to figure out who this guy on my shelf might be. Doesn't look quite as happy as your chap.
Best regards,
Bill H.
