Subject:Request your help in identifying symbol and age of charger
Posted By: RFM Thu, Aug 02, 2018 IP: 75.71.168.96

Friends,
Attached are photos of a very large charger. I believe the mark on the back is Aoki Brothers, however, I'm not sure of the mark on the front. I'd greatly appreciate any information on the front-side mark and any information on age. Thank you in advance!

Your charger is an Arita charger with the mark on the front being "Hi", first character of Hizen 肥前. Arita is a town in the former Hizen Province.

Back mark looks indeed like a early Aoki Brothers mark. Date 1890-1900.

The Aoki Kyodai-Shokai (Aoki Brothers Company) was founded in the 1890's by Aoki Jinichiro (1863-1955). The Aoki Family Kiln is a historical and very important Japanese Hizen kiln. The Aoki Kiln closed after the turn of the century before they were reopened later by the 2 descendants.

Regards,
Martin.

HI ;-)

Aoki brothers is correct. The mark on the front is a variation of "HI" wich is a short writing for Hizen (Arita). Most pieces bearing such a mark can be dated to the Meiji period.

Arjan
