Subject:Strange Japanese straw scroll.
Posted By: Spartakos Fri, Jul 20, 2018 IP: 49.49.232.147

Got this weird looking scroll together with a collection of old prints of Japanese Imperial family, is it related somehow? What is it anyway, it is painted on both sides and seems to be made of very fine straw. Thank you.

Title inscriptions on the straw blind sudares (簾) )
酋奏 雨 - Sōu
吟風 - Ginpu
Both of them are well known rice wine (sake) brands on the Japanese market. The texts are about the relationship between the rice cultivation and the weather conditions.
I think these sudares are from the Meiji or Taisho periods given by sake breweries to restaurants etc.as decoration and advertisement.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Wow, this was unexpected, an interesting piece of advertisment. Will investigate it further. Thank you.
