Subject:Guangxu mark
Posted By: Rob V Wed, Jul 04, 2018 IP: 209.171.88.115

Hey folks,
What do you make of this bat plate? Its got guangxu marks and in every other way looks authentic. I have not ever seen the small circular mark underneath before. Is it legit? Is it a reproduction? Can anyone tell me about it?

The small circular mark tells the whole story. it contains the character 仿, which translates as "as in the style of ..."

Your plate, then by this definition is a reproduction of a GuangXu original. The small pictures make it hard to express an opinion on the quality.

The mark is a circled character "仿" (fang), meaning "imitation".

Gotheborg.com illustrates a similar circled "fang" in conjunction with a "®" for "Registered" copyright mark and a seal-form logo with lion in the middle on the base of a transfer-decorated vase in their "Recent Additions-Unsorted" section at the end of the "Later Chinese Porcelain". I would guess from the circled "R" and look of the vase that the piece would date to around the 4th quarter of the 20th century or later. So perhaps your bat plate is about the same.

Best regards,

Bill H.
