Dear Asian Art Forum,

I would love to know more about this piece.

I have attached a web link with pictures of what I believe to be an antique Chinese or Japanese beautifully wood carved bird bath & branch stand.

The stand frame appears to to be made of a very knobbly exotic branch wood, pin tacked together to form a cross frame.

The large top bowl is of a very light weight wood which has a lovely carved lily pads, lotus flower stems, kingfisher & frog design.

Lower second tier bowl seems to have bone or ivory insert flower decoration.

Approx size is 28" tall & 19" wide.

I'm really not sure of this items exact

origin?
age?
or value?

so any information would be much appreciated.

Kind Regards & fingers crossed

Thomas D Clarkson

In my opinion I don't think so much skill and quality would have been given to creating a bird bath, and what function would the plate below have provided the birds.

No, I suggest this is probably a wash basin. Very beautiful and delicate, certainly to suit a elegant boudoir.

That makes perfect sense- a posh wash stand.

Thank you
