Subject:Prewar woodblock - unknown artist
Posted By: J. Boussinesq Tue, Jun 19, 2018 IP: 2600:1702:1d80:a040:

This woodblock I came across has a very strange seal unlike any I have ever seen. Any assistance in identifying the artist would be appreciated. I am told it is 1930s Japanese, but can not verify the date. The signature and seal do not appear in my references. Thank you for the help.

Signature reads,
貞雄 - Sadao
I can't read the seal.
In the name registers there are 3 Japanese painters listed with given names Sadao (貞雄)
l, Gotō Sadao 五島貞雄 a.k.a. Gotō Kōho
(五島耕畝)1882-1958
2、Katayama Yōkoku 片山楊谷 1760-1801 his original given name was Sadao
3, Murakami Sadao 村上貞雄
I could not find any biographical data about him, except his "Hundred Flowers Drawings" woodblock print album was published in 1932 by Unsōdō (芸艸堂). I would opt for him.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Dear I. Nagy,

Thank you for the reading. After a short search, another book edited by Murakami Sadao shows up, Mangekyō (万華鏡), a 3 volume set of woodblock designs (not flowers) also published by Unsodo. I will have to look more, as there was not a signature available online for comparison.
