Subject:Unknown Japanese Painters, first two of four
Posted By: J. Boussinesq Sat, Jun 02, 2018 IP: 2600:1702:1d80:a040:

Hello,

Here are four Japanese paintings where I have been unable to determine the artist. They were together with two by Uehara Konen (1878-1940) so they are all likely to be 20th century pre-war Japanese. These signatures and seals don’t seem to be in my references, which mostly run to woodblocks, so any help would be greatly appreciated. The first two are here and the second two will be in the next message.

In a closely related matter, can anyone suggest good print or online references for Japanese painters in the first half of the 20th century? In English is best. I seem to be drawing a blank too much lately. Thanks in advance for all of the help.

Need clearer closeups of the seals, which will probably be easier to identify than the simplified cursive signatures. It's not hard to read one character of each of these signatures; the other is the challenge

Unfortunately, the seals themselves are not clear impressions, so new pictures would probably not help much.

In better news, I have learned that the first painting is by Nakayama Shuko (1878-?), who was known as a bijin artist but does not seem to have a lot more biographical details.

1st Pic.
Signature and seal read alike,
秋湖 - Shuko
Nakayama Shuko 中山秋湖 1876-
Shin-hanga artist born in Tokyo, Disciple of Mizuno Toshikata, was good in ukiyo-e genre, bijin-ga, Buddhist pictures etc.

2nd Pic.
In my tentative reading the signture reads,
笠村 - Ryuson
In the seal the 2nd character in not clear enough to read, could be 村
Most probably Kijima Ryuson 木島笠村 1902-
(Only the name listed on the 大日本絵画家著名大見立 - Selection of Famous Japanese Painters 1913)

With regards,
I.Nagy

Dear I.Nagy,

Thank you again for the reading. I have managed to find several Nakayama Shuko paintings with identical signatures, which is quite gratifying.
