Subject:Emperor and Wife Ivory statues????
Posted By: John Sun, May 20, 2018 IP: 94.197.120.70

Hello everyone I have a pair of statues purchased from an auction. Looks to be of the Emporer & Wife maybe. Ebay struck the item and said it's Ivory! First off I had no idea it could be ivory I assumed it is bone.it is highly carved. So even if it is ivory it must be an antique. Which is legal. So could any of the great guys on here take a look and let me know what you think. First thing that struck me is they are highly carved and old. The head of the Emporer has been repaired. Here are the photos - on the photos they look more yellow although they are actually white creamish colour. The camera makes them look very yellow they are not.

Sorry to inform you that your pieces are made from resin composite and are not ivory or bone.

If you look closely at the surface you will see the occasional "burst" bubble or pinhole caused by air bubbles in the resin mix.

Although they have been made to simulate the shape of an ivory tusk, I would suggest these are moulded resin figures. From one image it seems the base has some pock marks which are a sign bubbles formed in the resin and burst when setting. it's a give away sign they might not be ivory.

It is cast resin. Probably 1970s or later.

These appear to be cast resin. You can see the bubble voids in the close-up of the base.

Cheers,

These figures look more like resin castings, with what look like burst bubbles showing on some of the sharper edges.
