Subject:OIL PAINTING ON HANDMADE CANVAS? VERY OLD - PLS HELP

This is a very old, primitive, oil painting on hand made cloth (canvas?). The painting is approximately 9" x 12". It was given to me in the 1950s, by an elderly Asian gentleman who reminded me, often, about its antiquity.
Until recently, I didn't think about it's origin, or its age. I am now in my late 70s, and I have become very curious.
I appreciate any time you might take to help me.
It has never been on a stretcher, and has not been in a frame. It is wrapped around a very thin paper board backing, which is falling apart. The canvas and paint are in excellent condition.
