Subject:Glazed sake cup tea bowl
Posted By: John Thu, May 10, 2018 IP:

Hello everyone I purchased this small cup. It has a four character mark which I cannot locate. I also don't know what these are referred as . If they are sake cups or called Tea cups or tea bowls? It is glazed almost dark blue or dark purple. Can anybody be so kind to help me with the correct term for the item and any help with the marking? Many thanks in advance.
Regards John

As you didn't give dimensions, and because you also suggested it might be a sake cup, I can only assume the size. To me the shape looks more like a teacup, made for the Chinese tea ceremony.

The four character mark appears to read (I'm a little uncertain of the last character) 御坊珍藏, which I read as a treasure from the Imperial workshop collection.

However, I notice that 國珍藏 is a brand of Chinese liquor. It may be part of a promotion for the brand.

Also a search of the four characters show a large number of small cups, but all I saw were shallow, and perhaps more like the shape of a sakazuki. But at the same time, I noticed that at least one of the cups was being offered by a tea company in Taiwan.

You can draw your own conclusions.

In Chinese, the mark says "Imperial Workshop Collection" (御坊珍藏 - Yu fang Zhen Cang). It seems not to be in "The New & Revised Handbook of Marks on Chinese Ceramics" by Gerald Davison, a probably significant absence, considering that valid imperial marks have hardly been in hiding and how the bowl doesn't look quite imperial, with it's apparently reduced foot. But wait for other comments before you consign it to the back of the cabinet.

Best regards,

Bill H.
