Subject:Woodblock Identification
Posted By: Adam Henning Tue, May 08, 2018 IP:

Hello everyone,

I have recently purchased a beautiful little Japanese woodblock that is signed / chop mark present in the top right corner. I have tried to figure out the artist but without any luck. I do not read Japanese so if anyone can help / translate it would be excellent!

That is absolutely phenomenal! I cant thank you enough for taking your time and identifying the work for me. It is very generous and fascinating. It looks like on a google search that Cai lived from 1686-1756. Could this woodblock be that old or do you think this is newer from a different artist?

Curious to know your thoughts,
Adam H

Der Adam,

Sorry, last night I had not enough time to look more carefully after Cai Jia. Meantime I have found out only a few more biographical data e.g. his lifespan (1686- death after 1756), born in Jiangsu Danyang. In one of my Chinese painters ID lexocon
there are 64 seal prints listed from him, 11 with the same 蔡嘉 (Cai Jia) 2-character prints, but all the 11 seal prints were different in details.
Conclusion, seemingly you do have a nice lookalike Cai Jia art piece.

With regards,

I greatly appreciate you helping me on the previous woodblock and I had an old friend who has had this woodblock in his possession for 20+ years. He had it many years ago partially translated but one character was not able to be read apparently. Does the translation look accurate and are you able to read the one unknown character? Thanks so much! - Adam H | Associations | Articles | Exhibitions | Galleries |
