Subject:Bowl. How old and which period ?
Posted By: Allen Miller Thu, May 03, 2018 IP: 223.229.211.11

How old and from which period is this bowl from?
Is this any script written on the bowl?If so what would be the translation.
Any idea of the mark inside the bowl and why are the characters or design whatever it is in black and blue.

Is this bowl not from either China or Japan ?
I guess as nobody has responded.

Your bowl is similar to the hand-painted blue and white bowls being produced in Jingdezhen workshops in Jiangxi province, China, except the decorations look stamped. They appear to be just decorative designs rather than text characters.

Your bowl might be Vietnamese in origin.

The black pigment you see is the natural colour of the cobalt oxide, which turns blue during firing when it reacts with the ingredients in the glaze covering it.

Thanks TD, for your reply and guidance.
The decorations are not stamped but are definitely hand painted.
Whether they are of Chinese or Vietnamese in origin what sort of a period do you think they are from.
Regards
Allen

Coarsely made utilitarian wares such as this may have the look of age when there is none. Likely not earlier than the 20th century. Probably just a few decades old.
