Subject:Chinese Paintings... Translation?
Posted By: Daniel Sun, Apr 29, 2018 IP: 2001:569:7012:a900:7

I posted about these two paintings here quite a few months back hoping someone could help me with the translation of them so I could try to identify the age/artist/scene etc. and maybe get some additional information but unfortunately I got no reply so hopefully someone is here this time who may have better translating skills who's willing to help. Thank you for taking the time to help me out! I really appreciate it.

photo 1 = characters written on the top part of the scroll (photo two). I am assuming they describe the scene? and hopefully the artist?

photo 2 = the waterfall scene with an inscription and seal.

photo 3 = the second painting with a few scribbles on the top of the scroll in pencil and some black ink characters on the wood support. I am assuming these are probably prices or something general and don't describe what or who has been painted (which is a shame because I'd really like to connect this portrait to an individual.

Your pictures are Japanese.
Reading of inscriptions,
Photo 1, (From left to right)
李白瀧見之圖 - Picture of Li Bai (Li Po) viewing the waterfall
曽我長門之助筆 - Brush of Soga Nagatono no Suke
鳳州求焉 - Longing for Feng Prefecture
加藤必要家具 - Household item needed for (Mr.) Katō
Photo 2,
Signature reads,
曽我長門助徳輝畫 - Picture of Soga Nagatomo no Suke Tokuteru
Seal,
曽我徳輝 - Soga Tokuteru

Name of painter: Soga Tokuteru, (Nagatomo no Suke - Art-name)
(On the Japanese language Aucfan auction site I could find some scrolls from the same painter,
without any biographical data. His name is not included in Japanese painter ID indexes)

Photo 3,
Black ink characters,
肖像 - Portrait
Pencil script,
天理僧 - Priest of Tenri (Religious sect)

With regards,
I.Nagy

I. Nagy,

Thank you again for this great translation, I could have never figured this one out on my own. I had a suspicion they may be Japanese especially the waterfall painting as the script above the seal gave it away. The priest really threw me off as I couldn't find any Chinese style garments to match, so being a Japanese religious sect makes a lot more sense!

D.
