Subject:Japanese Satsuma Cup & Saucer Set
Posted By: Eddie Peters Sun, Apr 22, 2018 IP: 45.124.203.14

Hi all,
Hopefully someone can help. We have been gifted a beautiful Japanese cup & saucer set of 7. We are trying to identify the period and maker / artist. All pieces have markings (see photo) & we would be forever grateful if someone could assist with identification.
Regards
Eddie

Hello Eddie,

Could you please send sharp pictures of the cups and saucers and of sharp ones of the marks, perhaps then I can help you.
Regards,
Martin.

Hi Martin, I've attached more photos. Other detail, the cup is approximately 5 CM tall & the saucer is approximately 13.5 CM wide. Thankyou in advance. Eddie
Note: will upload pic of saucer separately due to file size.

Eddie,

First: it's a beautiful cup and saucer, Satsuma pottery, marked Genzan 源山, date 1921-1930. As a collector of Japanese antique and vintage cups and saucers I like it a lot.

It's the mark of Yagi Gentaro, who started Yagi Genzan-do in 1921. He was a Kutani retailer / merchant in Kanazawa, Ishikawa. The shop still operates by his family.

Do you happen to be from the Netherlands like me?
Regards,
Martin.
