Subject:2 japanese mirrors framing a print with butterfly-winged persons
Posted By: manuD Sat, Apr 21, 2018 IP: 82.234.79.138

A friend asked me about this print with two persons with butterfly wings, on a 3-panel device where the left and right panel are mirrors. I tried unsuccessfully to read the text in the box in the lower rught corner of the print. The third column has katakana writing which makes no sense to me.

I found another such print framed by mirrors, but with a different text, on internet. It is on the bottom image.

my friend and I would be very thankful if somebody could translate the text, and possibly explain the purpose of these mirrors.
Are they supposed to be in a bathroom?

no wondern I couldnt decipher this unexpected mixture of kanjis, katakana and hiragana.

I also wondered about the winged persons, something I have never seen on the very numerous woodprints that I have admired over the years.

So this seems to be a French production.

thank you very much.
