Zitan used during the Ming and Qing dynasty is quite distinct in the manner of its color, density, grain, and trait referred to as 'golden thread'.
Modern 20th c. 'zitan' does exist, and while it often has a twisted grain and may even be dark in color (although often a result of being dyed), it lacks the density and 'golden thread', so it is a far cry from genuine zitan both in quality and value.
It would be better to know what your interest is based upon with regards to buying the cabinets.
If you are looking to build a collection that will appreciate in value, I would recommend passing on the cabinets unless you are 100% sure they are Qing or Ming dynasty. The market for zitan copies, or re-furbished pieces has been very weak.
Modern and refurbished Huanghauli furniture on the other hand seems to still have a strong interest among some collectors. This is probably because the beauty of the unusual grain makes it appealing to a wider audience, regardless of age.
Pics of the cabinets would be helpful for any further advice.
Best,
Tim
