Subject:Mystery Celadon Jar
Posted By: Thomas K Fri, Apr 20, 2018 IP: 125.236.160.238

This is the other ceramic piece I bought when I was in Japan - the seller didn't really know much about it, but said it had come from the estate of an 'old household'. The rim of the lid and foot have a little baked-on rough sand. It stands 29cm high and is 24cm across at the widest point.
Does anyone know what country this jar is likely to have been made in? There aren't any identifying marks on the bottom. I wondered if it was old Chinese or Japanese, but equally it could be modern Thai...
Also, would anyone have a good guess as to the period it might be from? It looks pretty old, but that might just be due to how celadon ages and cracks.
Finally, does anyone have an explanation to the red buildup on the bottom? It's not dirt, it's some type of mineral deposit or baked-on thing as it's sort of hard and slightly glassy.

Thanks,
TK.
