Readings,
乄池田 - Shime Ikeda
乄綿本 - Shime Watamoto
乄小 - Shime Ko
The 乄 (shime) is an auxiliary character (補助漢字)with the meaning something like "close/closing". In case of foods eg. edible kelp or sushi refers to something that's pickled (昆布乄、乄鯖).
Therefore, in my opinion this wooden object could have been a part of some picling device for edible kelp (konbu)
The inscription possibly were the brand names of konbus - if I am right.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thank you ! I should of posted a picture of the bottom as it has a hole the same size of the top which goes straight through. It seems maybe a rope or string could have been placed through this.
