Subject:Two unknown signatures, Japanese paintings
Posted By: J. Boussinesq Sun, Apr 01, 2018 IP: 2600:1702:1d80:a040:

Below are two shikishi paintings with signatures/artists that I have not been able to figure out. These were together in a fitted box with seven Nishimura Hodo paintings, but I have not been able to find out who painted these two. The first may have read Choshiro, but maybe not.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, although I realise that this may comprise another two of the many unknown artists.

Pic No.1
Signature and seal read aalike,
長四朗 - Chōshirō - Name of artist
Hiraiwa Choshiro (平岩長四朗)1902-1987
Graduated Tokyo Art School, Studied under Gōkura Senjin

Pic. No.2
I cannot figure out the first very cursive character - same problem with the upper seal
...葉英 ...ba(ha) Hanabusa (Ei)
Lower seal reads,
英 - Hanabusa (Ei)

Even the possibilty of a Chinese artis cannot be ruled out.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thank you for the helpful reading. I will have to look up Hiraiwa Choshiro to find out more.

I will have to keep searching for information on the Hanabusa sparrow but the seal reading helps - it is probably not Chinese as everything else this shikishi was found with came from 1930s Tokyo/Yokohama. At least this should narrow it down a bit.
