Subject:Old Chinese scroll painting on silk
Posted By: sue nettesheim Mon, Mar 26, 2018 IP: 24.146.250.46

I purchased this scroll painting on silk in 1985 for $800 from a reputable dealer. I was told it was 18th/19th century. It is framed with lucite on top which makes photos difficult. It measures 25 x 58 inches including the white border. I have attached photos of the entire image, the markings, and a close up to try and show the quality of the piece.

I'm interested to know anything about the piece. What does the writing say? Can the artist be identified? Is the date correct? Any comments on the value? Thank you!

The last line of the inscription reads,
戊午春仲 - Year of Earth-Horse (...1738..) Mid-Spring
新羅山人嵒 - Xinluoshanren Yan (Yan - Hermit of the Xinluo Mountains) - Art-name of painter

Hua Yan 1682-1756、famous painter of Qing Dynasty

Seal (Upper)
華嵒 -Hua Yan
Seal (Lower)
新羅山人 - Xinluoshanren

With regards,
I.Nagy

Many thanks for this information! I will now be able to see what else I can find out. I am interested in selling the painting. If you have any thoughts on who might be able to help me with that, please let me know! I live close to New York City.
