Subject:Carved (or textured) celedon plate painted with Japanese irises.
Posted By: Brandon mccloskey Sat, Mar 17, 2018 IP: 173.188.16.27

I was hoping someone could translate the marks on this plate and possible give me a bit of info on it. Thanks once again :) P.s There is are 2 "cracks" but I do not believe they are cracks, the edge of a piece of paper does not catch on them, whats up with that?

Could I at least get a translation on the kanji please? :)

Keep in mind, I'm coming at this through schooling in Chinese, in which mode I often screw up. However, my screw-ups also often attract the rescue impulse in kind souls around here who know what they're doing.

The base-mark looks to be 孝山 , and the only name I could pull out of the internet was Takayama, indicated to be a surname. However, I could not find a piece of porcelain online with the same kanji rendering.

The seal and signature in the cavetto both read 麥山 (simplified form 麦山), which pop up at the link as the Bakuzan-Gama (Bakuzan kilns - 麦山窯), a contemporary producer in the Seto area of Aichi Prefecture.

Good luck,

Bill H.

Brandon,

In my opinion it's a Japanese plate but it took me a while to find the - what I think - correct Kanji: 麥山 which translates as Mugiyama (Kun-reading) or Bakuzan (On-reading). The red seal has the same mark.
A quick scan on the internet give no results, but perhaps you have a starting point for searching yourself.
Regards,
Martin.

Thank you guys, I was unable to find anything referring to Takayama either and the Bakuzan, while there is some information to kilns I do believe those and my piece are unrelated :(
I could not find a single similar mark, celadon piece or design pattern in the past 1 1/2 hours.

Would it be possible to accurately speculate on a date of production?

Not visible in the pictures is the faintest remanence of gold adorning the outer edge . I dont know if that will help date it at all but my idea is; that, paired with a few marks from firing, the shapeand style that the foot is in and that its been hand done & signed point to it being at least of antique age... no?

Hello Folks
In my uneducated opinion.....
1970's
Why...
Cris / Cross pattern on glaze. European Retro.
Octo form not traditional Chinese or Asian.
Do kilns put stamps on the front of plates?

If you had the whole set you might have something. I could of course be so wrong my ears will ring for a month.....Best wishes D
